WHAT ARE NEUROTOXINS
Neurotoxins are a type of cosmetic injectable made up of a purified protein produced by the clostridium botulinum bacterium. The product is injected into the skin and muscles using a fine gauge needle and works by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles, thereby preventing muscle contraction. It’s the contracting of these muscles that can cause signs of aging like frown lines, crow’s feet, or forehead lines. Neurotoxins can help to reduce, prevent, and treat these wrinkles.
Neurotoxins are also great because they are fast-acting, showing results in only 3-14 days. They are compatible with all skin types and can be used in conjunction with other treatments.

It is generally the most well-known neurotoxin treatment since it was the first to gain FDA approval in the U.S. It also has a longer history than other brands of neurotoxins. It is manufactured by Allergan, which is the same company that makes the Juvederm family of dermal fillers.
DYSPORT
Dysport works in a similar fashion to others and was the next neurotoxin on the U.S. market. It’s manufactured by Galderma, which is the same company that makes the Restylane family of products.
XEOMIN
Xeomin also works to smooth both shallow and more pronounced facial lines the same way Botoulinum does. This neurotoxin is manufactured by Merz Aesthetics, the same company that makes Radiesse and Belotero Balance dermal fillers. Xeomin has no protein carrier like Botulinum and Dysport do, which may help patients delay the development of a tolerance to the product.

Those who are pregnant are also advised not to receive neurotoxin injections.

Every patient is different depending on his or her metabolism of neurotoxins. Most patients find their injections last around 3-4 months. Some patients metabolize injections faster than others, leaving them with effects for 2-3 months, while others have the amazing benefit for up to 6 months. Over time can fatigue the muscle allowing for less movement after the wears off, allowing more time between injections.

Post-injection, you should expect a little bit of swelling and slight redness, which usually goes away in a matter of hours. Avoiding heavy exercise, salty foods, and alcohol will help to avoid excessive swelling.

Most patients love the way they look after Neurotoxin injections, but it is not necessary to continue the treatment forever if you wish to stop.

Before receiving neurotoxin treatment, it is important to avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours prior and to refrain from taking blood-thinning medications. Notify your provider of any allergies or medical conditions. Post-treatment, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for 24 hours and do not engage in strenuous exercise. Refrain from lying down for at least four hours after the procedure. Use sunscreen and avoid prolonged sun exposure to maintain the results of the treatment. Follow up with any post-care instructions given by your provider to ensure the best possible outcome.
